Make your SHO handle better....

The SHO, like many other vehicles, benefits from firmer suspension components which limit the suspension geometry changes while maneuvering. One of the simpler modifications to the SHO is the addition of firmer "bushings". Bushings connect major suspension components where movement is necessary for maneuvering. Most bushings are made of varying grades of rubber, and depending upon the rigidity and environmental resistance of the rubber they can wear out and become deformed and soft. When this happens the handling of the car suffers. In many cases a car can be restored to almost "new" handling by replacing the major bushings.
Those key areas include the subframe, the front and rear sway-bars, and the sway-bar links. When these areas are upgraded, handling becomes firmer and more exact, while the ride remains comfortable.

In some cases where hard maneuvering is the norm, upgrading the bushings to either a firmer, less deformable material like polyurethane (known as "poly bushings"), or a rigid material like aluminum is appropriate. In each case there are pro's and con's. and a lot depends upon the condition of local roads. The police bushing kits include a harder rubber compound than stock SHO bushings (painted characteristic light blue to distinguish them). The aluminum subframe bushings are solid aluminum (shown above), machined to tight tolerances to hold the suspension firm.

  • Upgrade your bushings as the ride quality deteriorates with mileage
  • For firmer handling and more precise steering upgrade subframe bushings
